Real Project: The Golf Club 'Lodge' – Why Insulated Cabins Are Perfect for Business

This impressive building is not a standard garden shed.
It was commissioned as a Golf House for a course, designed to serve as a reception area or small clubhouse. When a timber building is intended for commercial use and needs to be comfortable for staff and visitors every single day of the year, a standard single-wall cabin just won't cut it.
This project is a perfect example of our "Twin Skin" (or Insulated) construction method.
1. The "Twin Skin" Advantage
If you look closely at the corners of this large building, you'll see vertical timber cover strips. These hint at the clever construction hidden within the walls.
- The Structure: Instead of one thick log wall, this building has two thinner walls (e.g., 44mm external + 44mm internal) with a cavity in between.
- The Insulation: This cavity is filled with high-performance insulation boards (like Celotex or Kingspan).
- The Result: A building that performs like a modern house. It stays warm in winter without blasting heaters, and crucially, it stays cool in summer when the sun is beating down on the golf course.
2. Built on a Concrete Slab
For a large, heavy, commercial building like this, a full concrete raft foundation (as seen in the photo) is the gold standard.
- Stability: It provides a perfectly level, rock-solid base that won't shift under heavy foot traffic or equipment.
- Durability: It stops moisture from rising from the ground, protecting the timber frame for decades.
3. Commercial-Grade Features
Everything about this building is scaled up for heavy use.
- Wide Double Doors: Perfect for bringing in equipment, golf bags, or even small machinery. They are glazed to make the entrance inviting.
- Large Scale: The sheer size of the cabin allows for a multi-functional interior—a counter, a seating area, and storage, all under one roof.
- Apex Roof: The traditional pitched roof with high-quality felt/shingles (and guttering, which you can see on the left) ensures efficient water run-off, keeping the entrance dry.
Summary
For businesses like golf clubs, campsites, or fisheries, an Insulated Timber Lodge offers a fantastic return on investment. It's cheaper and faster to build than brick, yet it provides a premium, warm, and professional environment that customers appreciate.
