How Do You Stop Condensation in a Garden Cabin?

It usually shows up on a cold morning in October. You open the garden office door, the windows are misted, there's a damp smell, and there may be a dark patch in the corner behind the desk. Nothing is leaking — and that's exactly what makes condensation confusing.

Condensation isn't a fault in the timber. It's physics: warm, moist air meeting a cold surface. Every occupied building in the UK produces moisture, and a garden cabin is simply a small, well-sealed room where that moisture has fewer places to go. The good news is that it's predictable, which means it can be designed out.

Where the Moisture Actually Comes From

Before fixing anything, it's worth knowing what you're dealing with. In a typical garden cabin the moisture load comes from a short list:

  • You. A person working in a cabin releases a surprising amount of water vapour just by breathing and being warm.
  • Kettles, coffee and drying coats. A wet jacket hung up on a rainy Tuesday can put out more moisture than a whole day of working.
  • Ground moisture rising through or around an inadequate base.
  • Cold, damp air drawn in and then chilled overnight.
  • Construction and decorating moisture in a brand new cabin, which settles down over the first few months.

Add a cold single-glazed window or an uninsulated corner, and that vapour has somewhere to condense.

Step One: Get the Base Right

Condensation problems often start below floor level. A base that traps water, sits in a hollow, or lacks a proper damp proof membrane will feed moisture into the building continuously — and no amount of ventilation will keep up with it.

A level, well-drained base with the correct membrane and a small air gap beneath the floor keeps ground moisture where it belongs. Step Two: Insulate the Cold Spots

Condensation forms on the coldest surface in the room. If your walls, floor and roof are insulated but the windows aren't, you'll get water on the glass. If the walls are insulated but a corner is bridged by an uninsulated framing member, you'll get a damp patch exactly there.

The aim is an even internal surface temperature, with no isolated cold spots for moisture to find. That means insulating floor, walls and roof as a continuous system, not just the easy wall panels, and choosing double glazing for anything you intend to use in winter. Step Three: Ventilate — Deliberately, Not Accidentally

This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that does the most work. A cabin needs a controlled way for moist air to leave and fresh air to enter.

In practice that means:

  1. Trickle vents or wall vents left open, not taped shut for the winter.
  2. Opening a window or door for a few minutes each day, especially after boiling a kettle or bringing in wet clothing.
  3. A small extractor or humidity-controlled fan in cabins with a kitchenette or shower room.
  4. Air movement around furniture — leave a gap between the back of a sofa or cabinet and the external wall so air can circulate.

Sealing a cabin tighter without ventilating it is the single most common cause of damp corners.

Step Four: Heat Steadily, Not in Bursts

A cabin blasted with heat for two hours and then left cold swings between warm, moist air and freezing surfaces — ideal conditions for condensation. Gentle background heat that keeps surfaces above the dew point works far better, and in a well-insulated cabin it costs remarkably little. Step Five: Keep Water Off the Outside

Finally, look at the shell. Blocked gutters, a damaged roof covering or splashback from a hard surface all soak the timber and raise its moisture content from the outside in. When to Worry

Light misting on glass during a cold snap is normal in any building. What isn't normal is persistent black mould, a musty smell that never clears, or damp that appears in the same spot regardless of the weather — those point to a specific cause, usually the base, a cold bridge or a water ingress point, and they're worth investigating rather than wiping away.
